Hinde\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_S._Hinde\">Thomas S. Hinde<\/a>, Dr. <a title=\"Thomas Hinde\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Hinde\">Thomas Hinde<\/a>, and <a title=\"Isaac Shelby\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isaac_Shelby\">Isaac Shelby<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<div id=\"toctitle\">\n<h2>Simon Kenton was born at the headwaters of Mill Run in the Bull Run Mountains April 3, 1755, in what is now <a title=\"Fauquier County, Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fauquier_County,_Virginia\">Fauquier County, Virginia<\/a> (birthplace was part of Prince William County at time of his birth prior to formation of Fauquier in 1759) to Mark Kenton Sr. (an immigrant from <a title=\"Ireland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ireland\">Ireland<\/a>) and Mary Miller Kenton (whose family was Scot-Welsh in lineage). In 1771, at the age of 16, thinking he had killed a man in a jealous rage (the fight began over the love of a girl), he fled into the wilderness of <a title=\"Kentucky\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky\">Kentucky<\/a>, <a title=\"West Virginia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Virginia\">West Virginia<\/a> and <a title=\"Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio\">Ohio<\/a>, and for years went by the name &#8220;Simon Butler.&#8221; He later discovered that the victim had lived, and Kenton readopted his original name. He is buried in Urbana, Ohio at N 40\u00b0 22.688 W 083\u00b0 39.399.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Old_Chillicothe_Site.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/6\/6f\/Old_Chillicothe_Site.jpg\/250px-Old_Chillicothe_Site.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><a title=\"Enlarge\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Old_Chillicothe_Site.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bits.wikimedia.org\/static-1.22wmf19\/skins\/common\/images\/magnify-clip.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"15\" height=\"11\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Site of the village of <a title=\"Old Chillicothe Site (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Old_Chillicothe_Site&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Chillicothe<\/a>, where Kenton ran the gauntlet<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 1774, in a conflict later labeled <a title=\"Dunmore's War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dunmore%27s_War\">Dunmore&#8217;s War<\/a>, Kenton served as a scout for the European settlers against the <a title=\"Shawnee\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shawnee\">Shawnee<\/a> Indians. In 1777, he saved the life of his friend and fellow frontiersman, <a title=\"Daniel Boone\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniel_Boone\">Daniel Boone<\/a>, at <a title=\"Boonesborough, Kentucky\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boonesborough,_Kentucky\">Boonesborough, Kentucky<\/a>. The following year, Kenton was in turn rescued from the Indians by <a title=\"Simon Girty\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_Girty\">Simon Girty<\/a> after enduring many days of <a title=\"Running the gauntlet\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Running_the_gauntlet\">running the gauntlet<\/a> and various other tortures that should have killed Kenton.<\/p>\n<p>Kenton served as scout on the famous 1778 <a title=\"George Rogers Clark\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Rogers_Clark\">George Rogers Clark<\/a> expedition to capture <a title=\"Fort Sackville\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Sackville\">Fort Sackville<\/a> and also fought with <a title=\"Anthony Wayne\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_Wayne\">&#8220;Mad&#8221; Anthony Wayne<\/a> in the <a title=\"Northwest Indian War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northwest_Indian_War\">Northwest Indian War<\/a> in 1793-94. Kenton moved to <a title=\"Urbana, Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urbana,_Ohio\">Urbana, Ohio<\/a> in 1810, and achieved the rank of brigadier general of the Ohio militia. He served in the <a title=\"War of 1812\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_of_1812\">War of 1812<\/a> as both a scout and as leader of a militia group in the <a title=\"Battle of the Thames\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_of_the_Thames\">Battle of the Thames<\/a> in 1813. This was the battle in which the famous Indian chief <a title=\"Tecumseh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tecumseh\">Tecumseh<\/a> was killed. Kenton was chosen to identify <a title=\"Tecumseh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tecumseh\">Tecumseh<\/a>\u2019s body but, recognizing both <a title=\"Tecumseh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tecumseh\">Tecumseh<\/a> and another fallen warrior named Roundhead, and seeing soldiers gleefully eager to carve up <a title=\"Tecumseh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tecumseh\">Tecumseh<\/a>\u2019s body into souvenirs, he identified Roundhead as <a title=\"Tecumseh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tecumseh\">Tecumseh<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_Kenton#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>There is a large boulder on the west side of the Ritter Public Library, 5680 Liberty Avenue, Vermilion, Ohio that was found on a farm a few miles to the south inscribed &#8220;KENTON&#8221; and is believed to have been carved by Kenton himself. (no photo available) (no reference)<\/p>\n<p>After Martha Dowden died in a tragic house fire, Simon Kenton married Elizabeth Jarboe and had 6 children in his second marriage. Kenton died in (and was initially buried at) New Jerusalem in <a title=\"Logan County, Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Logan_County,_Ohio\">Logan County, Ohio<\/a>. His body was later moved to <a title=\"Urbana, Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Urbana,_Ohio\">Urbana, Ohio<\/a>. After Kenton&#8217;s death, his widow and a number of descendents went to northwestern Indiana, to an area in <a title=\"Jasper County, Indiana\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jasper_County,_Indiana\">Jasper<\/a>, <a title=\"White County, Indiana\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_County,_Indiana\">White<\/a>, and <a title=\"Pulaski County, Indiana\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pulaski_County,_Indiana\">Pulaski<\/a> Counties which was heavily settled by families who migrated there from <a title=\"Champaign County, Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Champaign_County,_Ohio\">Champaign County, Ohio<\/a>, where Kenton is buried. Simon Kenton was also called Cut-ta-ho-tha by the Shawnees.<\/p>\n<h2>Namesakes<\/h2>\n<p>The city of <a title=\"Kenton, Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenton,_Ohio\">Kenton<\/a>, the <a title=\"County seat\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/County_seat\">county seat<\/a> of northwestern Ohio&#8217;s <a title=\"Hardin County, Ohio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hardin_County,_Ohio\">Hardin County<\/a>, was named in honor of Simon Kenton. A local school for the <a title=\"Developmentally disabled\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Developmentally_disabled\">developmentally disabled<\/a> in Hardin County is named Simon Kenton.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Kenton County, Kentucky\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kenton_County,_Kentucky\">Kenton County, Kentucky<\/a> is named for him, as is <a title=\"Simon Kenton High School\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_Kenton_High_School\">Simon Kenton High School<\/a> in <a title=\"Independence, Kentucky\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Independence,_Kentucky\">Independence, Kentucky<\/a>, the county seat.
